This
page has been created to answer that age
old question...does size really matter?
Throughout
the years, it has been often stated (and
very much overstated) that trout will
only hit lures up to a certain size. We've
even heard that some of our lures are
"too big for any fish to ever go
after", and more comments of the
like. Due in part to the size of certain
egos and other factors, this has gone
fairly unquestioned. Until Now. Us here
at B&L, plus many of our good friends,
have sought out to disprove this old myth.
Anyone
can tell their stories of how many fish
they caught on a certain lure, but that
isn't nearly enough to prove our point.
We would much rather show you the fish
that our lures are catching, like on the
Braggin' Rights Page, than talk about
them.
Of
course for us, that isn't nearly enough.
As always, we want to take it a step farther
and show everyone more than just pictures
of nice fish. That is where this page
comes in. A good friend of ours, Mark
Holt, came in one day with this tape of
him and some friends fishing. While there
were some great catches caught on that
tape, the most intriguing part of the
film was the cleaning of the fish at the
end.
Inside
one trout they opened up was....another
trout! While you, being the experienced
angler that you are, probably already
knew that trout like to eat other trout,
it's amazing how many people just don't
believe that. Well for those of you who
would be included in that group, you should
check out this nice little video. It shows
Mark & co. cutting open one trout
to find yet another trout. And we aren't
talking about some monster of a trout
feeding on a little baby. This is a fair-sized,
but not huge, trout that ate a fish half
the size of his own body. As you can see,
the stomach literally burst when they
tried to cut it open, and it was still
feeding!

But
that's not all... Just a few fish later
brought us another little gem. Inside
a 25" trout was a 12" mullet.
I trust you can do the math yourself and
realize that the mullet was roughly half
the size of the trout.
This
goes back to what we said earlier about
people saying some of our lures our too
big. Although it hasn't been around for
a long time, the Super Corky Devil has
already drawn its fair share of criticism
pertaining to its size. The Super Devil,
which measures about to about 6 1/2",
is only half the size of that mullet.
Rather than just throw numbers at you
I decided to play around with the picture
a little. In this picture, I took a shot
of our Super Devil, scaled it down to
match the rest of the picture, and layered
it on top of the picture. Look for yourself.
The
Devil in the picture is scaled down almost
exactly to the right ratio. Check it yourself
if you want: the mullet is 12" and
the Devil is ~6 1/2".
Simply
said, if a 25" trout can eat that
big of a mullet, our biggest lures should
just be a little snack.
Oh,
and just a little side note. This was
filmed during the winter, when the "experts"
say we are supposed to downsize our lures.
